Ovi Hits Another Level
- From: newell
-
Description:
Tracking the media attention around Alex Ovechkin, you can fairly easily chart the times where his celebrity has hit a new level.
His Washington Post Magazine cover demonstrated that he'd hit the mainstream in DC. His ESPN the Magazine cover showed his nationwide sports celebrity.
Last night, at around the 12:00 mark of TMZ's latest episode, we may have witnessed another breakthrough. The content isn't particularly noteworthy - we've all seen Alex be much more entertaining - but having a hockey player on an entertainment show is significant.
Our message to TMZ: come back again, with a better question. Ovi won't disappoint.

A Sad Loss
- From: newell
-
Description:
The Capitals have been blessed with a great deal of good news during the past three seasons, but readers of today's Washington Post were faced with a very sad story: the obituary for long-time season-ticket holder Thomas Jenkins.
Jenkins has had season tickets since USAir Arena, signing on in 1996. He has been a popular figure in Section 109, as the obituary mentions.
What's more, Jenkins' face is a familiar one to the entire Capitals' season-ticket base. His photo, which ran with the obit, appeared on the team's 2009-10 season tickets.
The Capitals will miss Thomas Jenkins and extend our thoughts and best wishes to his family and friends.

Backstrom Gives Back
- From: newell
-
Description:
Sometimes we forget how fortunate we are. Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom got a good reminder Monday night when he joined Mix 107.3’s Chilli Amar, Comcast SportsNet’s Lisa Hillary and Tires Plus’s Gary Dexter to pass out chicken noodle soup, hot chocolate, cookies and sweatshirts to the homeless around Northwest Washington, D.C.
This was more than a simple appearance; Nicklas went to eight stops around the district in The Salvation Army’s Grate Patrol van, serving food and talking to homeless people about their daily struggles of living on the street. Some of the homeless even knew Nicklas’s name because they had read it in the newspaper.
“This was a different experience for me, but the people were happy we were there,” said Backstrom, who is the spokesman for the Capitals’ canned food drive at their Nov. 20 game. “We weren’t just there to pass out food, we were there to talk to them and try to help any way we could.”
One homeless man even liked the hat Nicklas was wearing - so he gave it to him. “I have so much and they have so little," Nicklas said. "This night really opens your eyes to see how grateful we have it.”
Chilli Amar relayed her experience in her blog; look for additional coverage on Caps365 and Comcast SportsNet.
Major Steve Morris from the National Capital Area Command for The Salvation Army was there, along with members of The Salvation Army who help run the Grate Patrol program. The Grate Patrol program started in 1985 and operates 365 days a year with service to more than 1,000 individuals each month.

Must-Listen Radio
- From: newell
-
Description:
When it comes to media following a hockey team, you have your beat writers who cover every day, your broadcasters who cover the games and the every-so-often local media that will turn out when storylines and timing allows.
Somewhere in the middle of that, for 2008-09, Gemma Hooley and Chris Nelson fit quite comfortably.
Gemma and Chris are two full-time employees at NPR, or National Public Radio, who took on an ambitious project last season: follow Brooks Laich and Karl Alzner and try to give fans a unique look at life in the NHL, both on and off the ice.
The result, it can safely be said, is an unqualified success. You can find a 60-minute documentary they produced, along with bonus audio tracks, on their web site at www.mediachameleon.org
It's a must-listen for any Caps fan - and, really, any sports fan. But almost as interesting as the finished product is the process. Gemma and Chris put in countless hours - on top of their usual jobs - and made the D.C.-to-Hershey trip almost as much as Bryan Helmer did last year (they had entered the season thinking that Alzner would spend most of his time in Washington).
NPR aired three terrific pieces along the way, and we got an early look at the impact they could have (my mother, a fan but not a die-hard, called complaining about Alzner not making the team after hearing Gemma and Chris's initial report).
Once the season wrapped up - later than expected, thanks to Alzner and the Hershey Bears' Calder Cup - Gemma and Chris had to wade through hours of audio, including recordings the players made on handheld devices.
Then came the task of paring it down to 60 minutes. It could easily be three hours and worth a listen, but NHL Home Ice might not have been keen on airing it. The Sirius/XM station will run the entire documentary next week (exact times TBD).
You can also hear Gemma and Chris on Wednesday's Caps Report, and look for their story to be told elsewhere in the media as well.

Kudos is Due

Description:
Much has been said and written about the demise of newspapers in the past several years, some of it by our own Ted Leonsis.
As a Caps fan in Washington, D.C., this week, however, the Washington Post and Times felt very much alive. Alex Ovechkin virtually leapt off both pages on Wednesday, while Leonsis himself graced A1 of the Times on Thursday. It was an impressive display, filled with graphics and layout touches that proved the value of the medium.
And so as not to live solely in the past, both papers provided insightful online video. Take a look at some of the links here - and by all means, if you haven't already, get your hands on an ink-and-tree copy.

Caps Today: Holtby's Next
- From: newell
-
Description:Holtby’s next step – Braden Holtby is the only goaltender under contract with the Capitals who hasn’t played an NHL game – in fact he hasn’t played a professional game after wrapping up a stellar junior career with the Saskatoon Blades. That makes him the forgotten man in net as veterans report to training camp tomorrow, but he’ll be in the spotlight in today’s rookie game at the Philadelphia Flyers, where he should play the full 60 minutes. How Holtby plays today and in the coming weeks will likely determine whether his pro career begins in Hershey (AHL) or South Carolina (ECHL) as the highly regarded fourth-round draft pick takes the next step in his development.

A Whirlwind Day with Ovi
- From: newell
-
Description:He said his name and where he was from more often than a kid at freshman orientation. He gave countless intense looks into at least a dozen cameras. And he playfully dabbed a spot of shaving cream on a female model's nose.

Just an average day fulfilling a long list of promotional and media opportunities for Alex Ovechkin.
On the eve of his much-anticipated drive down Sixth Avenue in a Zamboni, Alex went through a gauntlet of events Tuesday in New York City, starting at 8:45 a.m. and not ending until nine hours later - just in time for a strenuous workout. All less than 24 hours since he arrived in the States.
Like most of these days Alex has been through in his five years in the league - can you believe this is his fifth? - there were laughs, a little tedium and gap-toothed smiles mixed with icy stares.
Alex also had plenty of questions about teammates, both old and new, and some curiousity about line combinations. Most of all, he said several times how much he can't wait to get to Washington and to get on the ice on Sunday.
He had his photos taken at least 100 times (many are already up for viewing on gettyimages.com), recorded promos for NHL Network, CBC, NBC and Versus, and wrapped the day with a three-and-a-half hour photo shoot for Men's Journal.
Another full day follows tomorrow, capped by the Zamboni ride and appearance at the NHL Store. - Blog post

Caps Today: A Defensive Scorer
- From: Paul2
-
Description:Mike Green and Zach Miskovic have something in common: both led their respective leagues in defenseman goal scoring last year. Green paced the NHL with 31 goals in 68 games, while Miskovic led all NCAA blueliners with 16 goals in 38 games. Miskovic, who played four seasons at St. Lawrence, was named first team All America as a senior and his 16 goals were eight more than any other defenseman on his team and two more than any other rearguard in Division I. The first-year pro had four game-winning goals and was tied for the team lead in goals as well. Miskovic has also played in 334 straight regular-season games dating back to his days with Cedar Rapids in the USHL.

Caps Today: Early Bird
- From: newell
-
Description:Twenty-three Capitals prospects will take the ice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex Monday, most of whom arrived in town this weekend. Center Anton Gustafsson should feel at home, however, having arrived two weeks ago to begin preparing for his first NHL training camp. The 2008 first-round draft choice and son of Caps legend Bengt Gustafsson is hoping to stick in North America – either with the Caps or the AHL’s Hershey Bears – after playing last season in Sweden. His performance in this week’s rookie camp will be the next step in the evaluation process as the Capitals determine the best spot for Gustafsson this season.

Irbe's Capital Connections
- From: newell
-
Description:With the introduction of Arturs Irbe as the Capitals' new goaltending coach, we unearthed a handful of Capital connections from the 13-year NHLer's career. They extend beyond the 8-12-5 record he compiled against Washington.
Consider:
- Irbe was a teammate of assistant coach Dean Evason when he broke into the NHL with the expansion San Jose Sharks, where his goaltending coach was Dave Prior. Prior, Washington's goalie coach for 12 years, stepped aside to spend more time with his family and recommended Irbe as his replacement.
- Two of Irbe's 33 career shutouts came against the Capitals, both while he played for Carolina: April 14, 1999, and March 15, 2001.
- Another new member of the NHL coaching fraternity, Joe Sacco, scored on the only penalty shot Irbe faced against the Capitals. That came just two weeks after Irbe shut out the Caps - March 30, 2001.
- One of Irbe's career highlights came after his NHL career had ended, a 3-3 tie against the United States in the 2006 Olympics that saw the New York Times laud his performance. New Capital Mike Knuble was +2 for the Americans in that game but didn't have a shot on Irbe. - Blog post

Varly has a new name
- From: Paul2
-
Description:Simeon Varlamov - in name only at least - is no longer a member of the Capitals. That is because the promising young goaltender from Russia has filed papers with the NHL to have his first name spelled S-E-M-Y-O-N for the upcoming season and foreseeable future.
However, name changes are nothing new to Varlamov. According to the NHL, when the Caps selected him 23rd overall in the 2006 NHL Draft his first name was spelled S-E-M-E-N. Papers were then filed with the league on behalf of the player to change the spelling of his first name to S-I-M-E-O-N prior to this latest change.
But for now, Semyon Varlamov should be used in all text and publications from this point forward. - Blog post

Great Men, from Fay to Z
- From: newell
-
Description:The proud members of Put Cancer on Ice staged the third annual Dave Fay Memorial Game Saturday night at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, a night to honor our great former beat writer and raise money for Hockey Fights Cancer, the disease that eventually took Dave down (Peerless has a great write-up on it).
I couldn't make it Saturday night, although I wish I could have. I spent Saturday at a funeral honoring and remembering the life of Zygimantas Zalys, or 'Z,' a proud Caps fan who succumbed to cancer last week at age 32.
Like Dave, Z loved the Caps. He was a firefighter in Manassas, and his funeral was filled with beautiful and moving tributes from the fire department, including a final ringing of a bell to close the service. NHL teams could take lessons in teamwork and loyalty from firefighters.
Hockey played a significant role in nearly every memory of Z as well. The first speaker, a friend of Z's named Chris, work a black Steve Konowalchuk jersey that Z and his wife, Jansen, had given him. Z wore jerseys everywhere - not just to games in the 400 level where he and Jansen used to have season tickets - so seeing one at the funeral was far from out of place. It was perfect.
I remember Z as someone who was always eager to talk hockey - and who I always looked forward to talking to, because he was as passionate and knowledgable about the game as anyone. He and Dave Fay were in a very rare class in that regard.
Last year when the Capitals supported Hockey Fights Cancer month in October, my thoughts often turned to Dave, who should have been perched in the press box still covering the proceedings. This year I'll think of both Dave and Z, who hopefully are watching games together. The fact that more and more of these great people are being lost to this disease is all the more reason to support Hockey Fights Cancer. - Blog post
